Watch: ‘Everybody Wants Some’ trailer takes Richard Linklater back to his roots

How will director Richard Linklater follow up his critically acclaimed and Academy Award nominated 2004 film Boyhood? Depending on how you look at it, he’s either going back to his roots or sort of continuing the story from his last movie.

Everybody Wants Some looks like the spiritual sequel to 1983’s Dazed and Confused (which also provided us with our unofficial social media mascot). If you prefer to imagine that this is where Mason ends up after the ending of Boyhood, perhaps that works too.

But as you can see here from the first trailer released for the film, Everybody Wants Some very much has the vibe of Linklater’s first couple of films, before he expanded his artistic scope and became one of the most interesting filmmakers of the past 25 years. Check it out.

Linklater played college baseball himself, which surely adds to the apparent autobiographical elements of this movie.

There are very few familiar faces in this cast, which is consistent with Slacker and Dazed and Confused. (Though the latter had a few players who went on to have prosperous careers, such as Adam Goldberg, Ben Affleck and Matthew McConaughey.) If you saw 22 Jump Street, perhaps you recognize Wyatt Russell (son of Kurt) who played Channing Tatum’s football bro in that sequel. Russell appears to be staying on the jock movie path, playing a college baseball player here.

Everybody Wants Some will be released in 2016, though an exact release date has not been announced. The rollout will surely be a slow one, maybe debuting in film festivals, then hitting the major markets before getting a wider release throughout the country.
