Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters this weekend and based on reviews and advance buzz, the breakout star from the film will be Wonder Woman, played by Gal Gadot.
Perhaps sensing that fans will want more Wonder Woman after seeing BvS, Warner Brothers released an image on Thursday from the Amazon Princess’ solo film. Gadot isn’t in her Wonder Woman costume, but is wearing Amazon armor (though not much) as Princess Diana and stands alongside fellow warriors Menalippe (Lisa Loven Kongsli, Force Majeure), Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen) and Antiope (Robin Wright).
As explained by EW‘s Nicole Sperling, the three Amazons accompanying Diana are those responsible for raising and training Diana. Hippolyta is Diana’s mother and prefers her daughter to stay on the hidden island Themyscira, avoiding the outside world. Antiope, meanwhile, wants to get her ready for war, perhaps anticipating man’s world eventually intruding on their paradise.
But back to that skimpy armor for Diana. Director Patty Jenkins (Monster) told Sperling that the ensemble isn’t just intended to show off skin or look fashionably fierce. She wanted the Amazons to look beautiful and badass. Think of how the warriors dressed in 300, but now imagine them as women.
“To me, they shouldn’t be dressed in armor like men,” said Jenkins. “It should be different. It should be authentic and real – and appealing to women.”
Wonder Woman is scheduled for a June 23, 2017 release.
