Superpower ranking: The 6 costumes of Justice League

The Justice League movie is coming, but which DC Comics superhero sports the best costume?

At Comic-Con 2016, tons of new footage, stills and reveals were announced for the upcoming Justice League film. The first look at the new Wonder Woman movie was shown in a badass, epic-scale trailer. We also saw an image of the Justice League together. The costumes are colorful and distinguishable from one another, but which is the best?

Here is our superpower ranking:

6. Superman

There’s really not much to say about Superman’s outfit. It’s not awful or ugly, but it’s not Superman. It’s dark, dreary and captures the murderverse Zack Snyder wanted to create before DC smartly realized a course correction was necessary.

Superman is supposed to be bright and uplifting. They don’t need to go full Christopher Reeve like Bryan Singer did in Superman Returns, but it would be nice if the Man of Steel’s costume didn’t make him look emo.

5. Aquaman

The fact that Aquaman’s costume (full look up above) doesn’t look goofy is a win. The scaled armor is a nice shout-out to Arthur Curry’s getup in The New 52 Aquaman comics. It’s decent.

Again, it looks emo, and could use some brighter colors. But costumes constantly evolve (well, not Superman’s) and this picture isn’t going for a bright and happy vibe. I’ll hold criticism until I see Aquaman on the big screen. It’s fine.

4. Cyborg

Cyborg’s outfit (or body) could have been a lot worse. It’s a tall task to make a half-human/half-robot design translate to the big screen. Fortunately, the CGI design works. The metallic features with the red details on the faceplate and chest look slick.

Since Cyborg’s look is a mostly digitally rendered costume, filmmakers can really go HAM on his technological capabilities. That’s exciting.

3. The Flash

This costume could have been in the No. 2 spot for me, but I’m trying to avoid recency bias. The details of the speedster’s outfit were somewhat revealed in a dream sequence in Batman v Superman, but that was a future version of the character.

The Flash’s Justice League costume looks straight out of the Injustice comic book run, as it’s more of an armor than pure threads like his TV counterpart. It’s not easy to make a distinctly different-looking Flash than we’ve seen on the small screen, but DC accomplished that. He looks great. I’m happy to see they kept his emblem bright and yellow.

2. Batman

We’ve seen this version of Batman in the much-maligned Batman v Superman, and while the film didn’t work on multiple levels, Affleck’s costume was perfect. It’s perhaps the best Batman costume done on screen. It’s a more beefy version than The Dark Knight trilogy’s Caped Crusader.

The costume is a nice homage to Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns series. All the details work, the mask, logo, boots and cape are superb. Snyder has mostly nailed Batman (aside from the murdering).

1. Wonder Woman

Goddamnit, Wonder Woman looks perfect. They’ve brightened up the character’\s costume from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and it makes a world of difference. The details are impeccable. Her armor is old-school, and the bracelets and lasso are perfectly realized for the big screen. It’s a crisp design.

There’s nothing to complain about. Wonder Woman looks like Wonder Woman.

If you want to check out all the costumes, watch the newest trailer for Justice League. It makes me excited for the DC Films universe once again — which is nerve-racking because the same feelings were had before Batman v Superman. Don’t let us down twice, Zack Snyder.
