With filming under way for Justice League in London, fans were hoping to see footage from the upcoming DC Comics superhero blockbuster at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Warner Brothers and DC Films made sure there was no fanboy letdown, revealing a teaser sizzle reel.
Perhaps best of all, the reel provides the first on-screen look of The Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher). Yes, we saw both characters in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but did anyone really like The Flash’s costume there? And did that scene really make any sense?
No head-scratching needed in this teaser, which shows Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) “looking for warriors” to get his superhero team together:
As anticipated, Jason Momoa looks entirely badass as Aquaman. (The White Stripes’ “Icky Thump” playing on the soundtrack doesn’t hurt with that.) The days of riding sea horses and waving at dolphins on the Super Friends cartoon have been left far behind. Of course, Wayne still had to get that “I hear you talk to fish” line in upon meeting the King of the Seven Seas. Hey, the elephant — whale? — in the room has to be addressed. Just get it out of the way.
It’s also fun to see the scene with Wayne recruiting Barry Allen to the team that many movie writers described on their visit to the Justice League set in June. As Allen/The Flash, Miller brings some much needed humor to what’s been an overly serious superhero universe thus far. Younger characters like him and Cyborg playing off the grumpy old Batman should provide some relieving chuckles throughout the film. (Affleck and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman appear to have some fun banter as well.)
DC Films also revealed a poster-type image of the full Justice League team, which provides a clear view at The Flash’s full costume, as well as a good look at Cyborg. And just in case you were worried that Superman (Henry Cavill) might not get to join up with the Justice League in light of the events in Batman v Superman (he’s not seen in the teaser footage), there is the Man of Steel prominently featured at the front of the group photo.
OK, Batman v Superman seems like more of a distant memory now (though it just came out on Blu-ray/DVD this past week). This looks more like the kind of movie for which fans have been hoping. Let the excitement begin!
Justice League hits theaters on Nov. 17, 2017.
