The CW and Supergirl release first look at Tyler Hoechlin as Superman

Earlier this summer, Warner Brothers Television announced that Supergirl would feature a special guest star in the first two episodes of its second season. Moving from CBS to The CW, producers wanted to make a splash and bringing in Kara Zor-El’s famous cousin, Kal-El — otherwise known as Superman — ought to accomplish that.

Soon after the announcement, Tyler Hoechlin (Everybody Wants Some) was cast as the Man of Steel. Though most could easily picture the actor in the role, an image of him in the iconic red, blue and yellow suit hadn’t been provided. That is, until now. On Thursday, The CW released a “family photo” of Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) standing next to her older cousin.

Here is a full look at the duo in their superheroic costumes:

Either that is a bad Photoshop of Hoechlin’s head on someone else’s body wearing the Superman outfit, or the man has a rather large head. Or maybe that is Hoechlin in costume, but he didn’t have quite the right look on his face, so an adjustment was made. Regardless, it’s a somewhat awkward photo. The point, however, is to provide a look at the TV Superman’s costume, which does different from Henry Cavill’s outfit in the movies.

While there are certainly similarities, Hoechlin’s costume looks brighter and more colorful, while also having some more design elements to it. Personally, I’m not crazy about the tabs where his cape is fasted, nor what is an awkward looking belt. But the boots look pretty cool, arguably an improvement over Cavill’s footwear, which hews closer to the comic book design.

Supergirl premieres its second season on Monday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. ET.
