It would be no big surprise — and really, no surprise at all — to see Henry Cavill return as Superman in Justice League. For those of you who still haven’t seen Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, this is venturing into spoiler territory, but we’re going on five months since the film was in theaters and it’s now available on home video, so come on now.
Director Zack Snyder and screenwriter Chris Terrio took elements from the 1992 “Death of Superman” comic book story arc for the climactic showdown between Superman and the monster Doomsday. The title pretty much says it all, in terms of how that battle turned out.
But no one ever stays dead in comic books, especially iconic characters who are the cornerstone of a publishing line, as Superman is for DC Comics. Superman was eventually brought back, and he’s going to return when the Justice League movie hits the screen. Henry Cavill has already appeared as Superman in promotional materials for the film.
Nonetheless, how Superman will return in the next DC film is something fans are naturally curious about. And if Snyder follows the “Death of Superman” arc, the character will come back wearing a black suit. That look has also been used for Superman in animated movies and TV cartoons. (He even wore something like that in a deleted scene from 2006’s Superman Returns film.)
On his Instagram page Monday, Cavill dropped a rather intriguing hint about going in that direction.
It certainly appears that Cavill will be donning that black suit at some point. Will he be sporting the mullet that Superman also wore upon his return?
Justice League is scheduled to hit theaters on Nov. 17, 2017.
