We are truly in the midst of a Mike Tyson renaissance.
The former heavyweight champion released a memoir, Uninspired Truth, which inspired a one-man show that played on Broadway. Jamie Foxx has agreed to play him in a movie that could be in theaters within the next two to three years.
Then there’s perhaps the ultimate sign of cultural acceptance: Starring in a cartoon. But it’s not a Saturday morning cartoon, so maybe he’s still kind of subversive. The project is an Adult Swim cartoon called Mike Tyson Mysteries and will air this fall.
Here is the clip reel for the show that played at Comic-Con in San Diego recently.
Many of the articles that have been written about Mike Tyson Mysteries compare it to Scooby-Doo, in terms of having a gang of characters that solves mysteries and encounters strange villains. (The mysteries will be brought to Tyson via the pigeons that he raises.) I got more of a Jonny Quest or The Venture Bros. (another Adult Swim production) vibe from that teaser.
But hey, if Tyson says the show is like Scooby-Doo, then it’s like Scooby-Doo.
