Hugh Jackman looks rough in first glimpse of Old Man Logan

While the new teaser trailer for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 sucked up most of the air in the superhero movie geek space on Wednesday, Hugh Jackman and Wolverine are ready to follow that up with a reveal of their own. Old Man Logan will simply not be ignored.

On Wednesday, Logan director James Mangold posted a black-and-white photo of his leading man as the title character. And he’s looking pretty rough.

Gone is the thick, wavy hair we’re accustomed to seeing on our mutant antihero. (That’s probably for the best, since trying to emulate the animalistic look from the X-Men comic books looked ridiculous on screen. So much hairspray.) Those marvelous mutton chops have become a beard. But most importantly, those are scars on Logan’s face. Scars on the man whose mutant ability allows him to heal quickly from any wound? Not anymore, apparently. Not for this older, diminished Wolverine.

The teaser trailer for Logan will reportedly be released on Thursday (Oct. 20), possibly by the time you read this. However, we live in a world in which we now have teasers for teaser trailers. So here’s six seconds from the Logan teaser, courtesy of Jackman.

Hopefully, this is the mean, ruthless, crazy badass that the X-Men and standalone Wolverine films have mostly only hinted at in the seven previous times that the character has been on screen. There have been glimpses of his berserker side, notably in X2: X-Men United, while X-Men Origins: Wolverine (which we should all forget ever existed) and The Wolverine have hinted at the beast that Logan has to keep in check, lest he lose his humanity. So what happens when Logan apparently has no reason to repress that side of himself?

One other glimpse that we haven’t included in our previous posts about Logan: Stephen Merchant (Hello Ladies) is playing Caliban, a mutant who has mostly lived in seclusion and underground because of his unusual appearance. He’s essentially a living version of Professor Xavier’s Cerebro machine, having the ability to track and locate mutants. Mangold posted a photo of Merchant in full make-up as the character.

Again, a teaser trailer for the film is expected to debut on Thursday (Oct. 20). Logan opens on March 3, 2017.
