What are 2014’s trending Halloween costumes, according to Google?

Maps of social media and search trends are a big thing online these days. What better way to get a feel for what people around the country are thinking about — especially when a cool graphic can be made of those results?

Halloween costumes are no exception. SumoCoupon put together this United States map based on Google search trends by state for costume ideas. As you might expect, superheroes dominate those trends, but a few states are more interested in different ideas.

Should it be surprising that Elsa and Anna Frozen costumes aren’t a bigger trend? That movie came out nearly a year ago, but after Halloween. And it still seems to be extremely popular among young girls. Maybe some of them prefer to dress up as The Hunger Games‘ Katniss Everdeen or the Avengers’ Black Widow, each popular in four separate states. (People love Jennifer Lawrence and Scarlett Johansson!)

The outliers seem especially curious. Like why is Medusa the biggest trend in Colorado? Dog-spider costumes in Washington? Care bears in North Dakota? And how about cheerleaders in Arkansas? What is going on there?
