We already know that the next Sharknado — titled Sharknado 3 — will wreak havoc upon Washington D.C. and Orlando. But will the third chapter of this epic man vs. nature trilogy aim even higher, like into outer space?
That may sound ludicrous, even for a concept that is entirely based on absurdity and trying to be “so bad it’s good.” But a new poster for the project, seen at last week’s American Film Market by Shock Till You Drop’s Ryan Turek, seems to indicate that upward direction for the series. Check it out.
The timing seems right, with Interstellar putting space travel and extraterrestrial aspirations in the cultural discussion. Maybe the Sharknadoes cause so much damage to our country that the human race has no choice but to flee the shark-filled storm systems and head into space.
Or maybe the outer space imagery is just one more wink at the audience from a series that has been nothing but winks and nudges. Hey, wouldn’t this be funny? Don’t laugh too much, though — it could really happen! OK, it won’t, but wouldn’t it be funny? But throw that out there, Sharknado, and it could be like Chekhov’s gun. If you’re going to show outer space, you better take us into outer space. Don’t even toy with our emotions like that.
Sharknado 3 is expected to air on Syfy in July of 2015.
