If you’ve been a regular watcher of HBO’s Last Week Tonight, you know that one of John Oliver’s recurring jokes is his dissatisfaction with Jamie Dornan being cast as Christian Grey in the movie adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey. Oliver even started the hashtag #NotMyChristian to make his stance clear.
But as it turns out, Oliver feels a little bit bad for being so critical of the casting. Well, maybe. While Last Week Tonight is on its long, bleak hiatus, the show has released short videos on YouTube to ease the pain left by Oliver’s absence from our televisions. This gives Oliver the opportunity to apologize to Dornan and reveal his true motivations behind #NotMyChristian.
As Oliver said, it’s an audition for a movie that’s already been made about a book that he’s never read. It’s not like that hasn’t stopped anyone from knocking a casting choice or movie adaptation before. But there’s something to be said for Oliver courageously putting his money where his mouth is. Does he think he can do better than Dornan? Well, he just showed us. There could be two more of these “Fifty Shades” movies, so maybe we shouldn’t write Oliver off.
Last Week Tonight returns — finally — on Feb. 8. Get back to our TVs soon, John Oliver.
