Ever since Wet Hot American Summer became a cult hit in 2001, fans have wanted a sequel or follow-up to the film. Several of the actors in the cast — such as Bradley Cooper, Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler — have gone on to become major stars, so part of the fun would be seeing the whole gang return to Camp Firewood in Maine.
And now, that’s really happening. An eight-episode Wet Hot American Summer series will premiere on Netflix this summer. And as this teaser trailer shows, the entire cast will be back. Actually, that’s just about the only thing this trailer shows.
Considering the higher profile most of the actors now enjoy, getting the band back together is an impressive achievement for director David Wain and company. Janeane Garofalo is surely grateful for the opportunity. (OK, that was probably mean. I’m actually a fan.)
The show will take place on the first day of summer camp in 1981. (Badass Digest’s Meredith Borders did the math and figured out that means the series occurs three months before the original movie.)
Here’s the trailer for the original Wet Hot American Summer movie, which was hardly a hit in theaters, but has reached cult status among comedy diehards. Wain has plenty more about the film on his website.
Go finish up the taters. I’m gonna go fondle my sweaters.
