Terminator: Genisys, Paramount’s attempt to reboot the “Terminator” franchise, hasn’t looked entirely promising, based on released story details (which make significant changes to previous mythology) and the actors cast to play iconic roles like Sarah Connor, John Connor and Kyle Reese. (Actually, I think Jai Courtney as Reese is really the only one that’s raising an eyebrow.)
But as we discussed earlier this week with Fantastic Four, a trailer can go a long way toward slowing the roll of bad publicity. A teaser trailer for Terminator: Genisys was released last December, but Paramount is coming back with a 30-second spot to run during the Super Bowl, now a prime time to market blockbuster movies. Here is the new ad:

Many are focusing on Arnold Schwarzeneggar returning to the “Terminator” franchise, especially in regards to the older version of Arnold battling the younger, hunkier 1984 incarnation in this film. The overturning bus stunt at the beginning of this spot is also an eye-popper. Hopefully, it’s not the best moment of the movie given away in a trailer.
However, I’m more intrigued by the “new threat” the Super Bowl spot promotes. It appears that we’ll be getting a brand-new Terminator robot to go with the original T-800 version (Schwarzneggar) and the T-1000 liquid metal shape-shifting model (played by Robert Patrick in 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Byung-Hun Lee in this latest movie).
The newest killing machine can be seen 10 seconds into the trailer, with human-like skeletal features and a metallic skin. It almost looks like a combination of the T-800 and T-1000 models. Maybe that’s exactly what it’s supposed to be. It hasn’t yet been revealed what role Matt Smith (Doctor Who) is playing in the movie. Could this new robot be the answer?
While you ponder that, check out Schwarzneggar in a new poster.
Terminator: Genisys will hit theaters on July 1.
