Video: ‘Furious 7’ standout among Super Bowl movie spots

Some of you will surely disagree, but I think movie trailers have become the most interesting ads during the Super Bowl. They’re not trying too hard to be funny or memorable, and certainly aren’t trying to bum you out by thinking about absentee fatherhood or childhood endangerment. Movie spots are just trying to get you excited about blockbusters soon hitting theaters.

Fifteen ads for upcoming movies played during Super Bowl XLIX, but only one of them featured a car jumping from one building to another. That was the spot for Furious 7, the latest installment in the Fast and Furious franchise. If you missed it or just want to see that high-octane 70-second ad again, here it is:

The spot for Ted 2 featuring Tom Brady was also a lot of fun, and enjoyed the added luxury of having a tie-in to The Big Game. But Brady, Mark Wahlberg and the teddy bear weren’t in a car jumping between skyscrapers while Jason Statham fired a rocket-powered grenade behind it. I mean, those are just the facts.

Personally, many fanboys were disappointed that Warner Brothers didn’t run a teaser for the upcoming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. (I admit to being almost as excited for that possibility as I was for the Super Bowl itself.) Alas, we were left hanging. But maybe we’ll get one next year, since that movie is coming out March 25, 2016. (And rumors are that we’ll get some superhero trailer action before Jupiter Ascending on Feb. 6.)

Furious 7 opens in theaters on April 3.
