Fanboys were left wanting when no Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice spot played during the Super Bowl. That allowed Marvel and Netflix to scoop up that geek love by debuting a teaser trailer for its upcoming Daredevil series Wednesday morning (Feb. 4).
Was the timing intentional? Probably not, since these sorts of things have to be arranged in advance, and Netflix initially released the trailer exclusively through IGN. But things worked out nicely, as they often tend to do for Marvel these days.
Here’s the first look at Daredevil, with Charlie Cox as conflicted lawyer Matt Murdock and his costumed alter ego.
Any fan of the Frank Miller and Brian Michael Bendis run of Daredevil comic books would likely say this series gets the tone right, based on what the trailer shows. The character lives and works in an extremely violent world, and grapples with how his profession and religious upbringing clash with what he does as a costumed vigilante.
I’m intrigued to see how the show depicts Murdock’s blindness and heightened senses. Say what you will about the 2003 Ben Affleck movie, but director Mark Steven Johnson did a nice job of making it clear that the hero was blind and had to see the world in a much different way.
The longer run of a TV series should also allow writers and producers to explore Daredevil’s supporting cast of characters — like his arch-nemesis The Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio), Foggy Nelson, Karen Page and mentor Stick — more in-depth than the movie did. From what showrunner Steven S. DeKnight has said, this first season is as much the Kingpin’s origin story as Daredevil’s.
Daredevil debuts on Netflix April 10. Oh, there’s going to be some binging that weekend!
