When I imagine a former boy genius who’s become a “get off my lawn” recluse because he’s disgusted with the world, George Clooney isn’t the first actor to come to mind for such a role. Director Brad Bird obviously disagreed, casting him as the lead (although Clooney probably casts himself these days) in Tomorrowland.
Here is the first full trailer for the Disney film.
Tomorrowland has the feel of a Disney cartoon. Watching the trailer, I almost felt like this could be a live-action Pixar film. (Hugh Laurie and his dour face would make a great Pixar character.) Of course, that’s probably not incidental, given Bird’s background in animation (directing The Incredibles and The Iron Giant).
The contrast between the rural scenery of Clooney’s outpost and the sleek, shiny, futuristic city of the film’s title is also jarring enough to feel truly special. I can imagine it will look fantastic on the big screen.
Still, I’m having trouble getting past Clooney in the role, although he does perhaps give off the vibe of someone who hasn’t quite let go of boyhood. I’m not suggesting he’s miscast. He’s proven himself to be a talented enough actor to play just about any role. Maybe I just need his beard from Syriana to tie the look together.
Tomorrowland hits theaters on May 22, Memorial Day weekend.
