Eyebrows were definitely raised among movie writers and fans when Paramount decided to move its next Mission: Impossible film from a Christmas Day release up to July. Even if avoiding Star Wars: The Force Awakens on the calendar is probably a smart move, taking about five months of prep time away put the pressure on director Christopher McQuarrie, screenwriter Drew Pearce and Tom Cruise to get Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation ready to go sooner than anticipated.
But posting a trailer online for consumption is likely a good sign that the movie has come together nicely. At least that’s how it appears, judging from the first teaser trailer released on Sunday (March 22).
Did you feel like it took too long for the iconic Mission: Impossible theme music to kick in? Give us what we want!
I’ll admit, I have kind of a soft spot for Cruise. I might just be way too impressed by him doing so many of his own stunts and fight scenes at his age. So when he’s doing drop-kicks and hanging off the side of an airplane taking off (even if he’s probably strapped onto the craft somehow), I’m watching. Maybe Cruise is pushing it with the shirtlessness. But the man is going to be 53 years old this year. He has clearly chosen to accept his mission.
Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames and Jeremy Renner are back with Cruise on the IMF team. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation will hit theaters on July 31.
UPDATED (Monday, March 23): Paramount has now released a full trailer for Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, with Alec Baldwin and Rebecca Ferguson (The Red Tent) joining the cast.
