Video: Madonna shows how difficult stand-up comedy is on ‘The Tonight Show’

As she reaches the later stages of her music career, it’s probably natural for Madonna to consider what she might do next. Would anyone have guessed that stand-up comedy was one of those possible endeavors?

OK, maybe that’s not the blond ambition she’s harboring. (Oooh, get it? That was pretty good. I should use that one.) This is probably more like what so many of us have told ourselves: We’d really like to try stand-up one day. My friends tell me I’m funny. I’ve jotted a few jokes down in a notebook. Why not give it a try? How bad could it be? It would only be for a few minutes.

The difference is that Madonna can go on The Tonight Show with host Jimmy Fallon being all too willing to put Madonna on stage and let her attempt three or four minutes of stand-up. (As many comedians will tell you, that’s quite a bit of material for an aspiring stand-up to cobble together.) Like Fallon was going to say no. She’s Madonna!

Does Madonna have a future in stand-up comedy? Well… at least she has the music and her body of work as an artist to fall back on.

OK, that was pretty awkward, as I’m sure it would be for almost anyone telling a story that’s funny among friends — and probably over drinks — but maybe not so much on stage, talking into a microphone (which could be blocking your face).

But making fun of yourself is always a good way to go in stand-up, getting the audience on your side. (Personally, I think she should’ve poked some fun at her wardrobe. You might be trying a bit too hard there, Madge. Even if you’re Madonna and can dress however the hell you want.)

So Madonna joking about her preferences for dating younger men was funny, and she even went a bit further with the joke than you might have expected. Also, getting a glimpse into how fast Madonna will write a guy off was a bit enlightening. You better know your modern art if you’re invited over to Madonna’s house, gentlemen. I mean, she owns the stuff, so she obviously knows something about it.

And hey, at least she tried, right? That’s what we’d be telling our friend if one of them got up on stage during an open mic night and gave stand-up comedy a try. (It probably helped that Fallon was all too willing to laugh at Madonna’s jokes too. That guy thinks everything is funny.) Atta girl, Madonna! I’m buying you a beer for that!

But how many of us would get to perform one of our past hit songs with Fallon and The Roots with classroom instruments as a consolation prize? Madonna is going to be all right, folks.
