On Tuesday, a cell phone video of actor Dennis Quaid supposedly losing his shit at a director and film crew made its way around the internet. Did we have another blow-up by an entitled actor on a film set, like Christian Bale’s infamous tirade during the filming of Terminator: Salvation?
Shortly after the video was uploaded to YouTube and linked on Reddit, skeptics began to voice their suspicions. Was the Quaid video legitimate? The clip being shot in vertical, “portrait” mode seemed to help with that impression. Was he really having a huge meltdown that could make him look like a dickhead for the rest of his career?
(Has that impression stuck to Bale? I’d argue he’s escaped that perception over the past six years.)
Or was this some kind of prank video, like those Jimmy Kimmel has played on our culture? Approximately a day later, we have our answer: This was all an elaborate Funny or Die bit.
Once in a while, we do exercise a bit of editorial judgment here at The AP Party. Though not much, admittedly. Hey, if something’s got the attention of the pop culture internet and it makes for a quickie post, we’ll throw it in The Locker.
However, the suspicions that the Quaid video might be a hoax gave us some pause. Was it really worth posting the video — even if was a potentially legendary awful moment by a somewhat famous actor — if the moment wasn’t legit?
Ultimately, we got to post it anyway, along with the follow-up Funny or Die gag. Everyone wins, especially Quaid.
