Over the past few days, pop culture has been hit by a wave of blockbuster movie trailers. One of them (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) worked magnificently, while another (Fantastic Four) was a pleasant surprise. And a long-awaited preview (Batman v Superman) was somewhat puzzling.
Riding that wave is the latest trailer for Jurassic World, hitting the internet just as the afterglow from Star Wars (which included a teaser for a spinoff, Rogue One, that hasn’t even begun filming yet) begins to dissipate. Where does this one rank? If Star Wars is No. 1, I’d put Jurassic World solidly in the No. 2 spot. But judge for yourself.
Above all, this trailer tells you what the movie is about, while not having to give away the entire movie (presumably) in its three-minute runtime.
We’re introduced to Chris Pratt’s Owen Grady, who appears to be a dinosaur whisperer and looks great in henley shirts and safari vests. We find out that the park’s corporate overlords get greedy, constantly trying to cash in on new exhibits and engineer an entirely new beast as a result. But as usual, the executives forget that they’re dealing with base animal instincts.
There’s a memorable line of dialogue — “We have an asset out of containment!” — which could almost be a tagline for the film. And there’s a lot of dinosaur chomping. Jaws are trapping shut and killing lesser reptiles all over the place.
Jurassic World — also starring Vincent D’Onofrio and Bryce Dallas Howard, and directed by Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed) — will hit theaters on June 12.
