The end of Parks and Recreation does not mean the end of Aziz Ansari doing comedy on your television. Ansari has already had success with comedy specials on Netflix (the latest being “Buried Alive“), which apparently compelled the network to greenlight a 10-episode series starring the comedian and executive produced by former Parks and Rec writer Alan Yang and co-creator Mike Schur.
Lest you think this might be a clone of Ansari’s previous sitcom, Vulture reports that the Netflix series will take place in New York. Unfortunately, that’s really the only solid detail known about the show right now. However, Deadline‘s Nellie Andreeva hears that the stories will largely deal with dating and relationships, including some semi-autobiographical elements.
In addition to Ansari, H. Jon Benjamin (Archer), Eric Wareheim (Tim and Eric), Lena Waithe (Dear White People) and Noël Wells (Saturday Night Live) have signed on with the cast. Claire Danes will be a guest-star on the series and James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now) is set to direct the pilot.
No word on when the series will premiere on Netflix, but writers have reportedly been working on the project for months, which might indicate that it’s close to filming. At this point, however, a 2016 debut seems likely.
