Watch: Natalie Imbruglia’s ‘Torn’ reveals pain in ‘True Detective’ season 2 teaser

Evidently, some people were underwhelmed by the teaser trailer for season two of HBO’s True Detective. I don’t share that feeling, but I can understand if there was some sentiment that the preview was somber, largely because of the song chosen to score it.

What was that song, by the way? Where can it be found? According to HBO, it’s an unreleased track by country singer Lera Lynn. The song seems to fit the mood of the show perfectly, but maybe some out there wanted a tune that was a bit more upbeat while also speaking to the personal pain these characters are experiencing.

One of those people was former SNL cast member Noël Wells, who took matters into her own hands and laid Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn” over the True Detective trailer. Does it work? Judge for yourself.

You know, Wells may be on to something here. Lyrics like “I’m all out of faith… this is how I feel” explain the sorrow on Colin Farrell’s face as he confronts Vince Vaughn, as well as situations that call for a little extra touch — such as brass knuckles. What is bugging Taylor Kitsch? Perhaps Imbruglia explains it with, “You don’t seem to know, seem to care what your heart is for…” He’s hiding a broken heart behind a badge and a gun, people.

Maybe HBO will decide that Wells tapped into the emotional depth of the show. We’ll see when season two of True Detective premieres on June 21.
