Video: Jeremy Renner sticks up for Hawkeye on ‘The Tonight Show’

Is Hawkeye like the Aquaman of The Avengers, the guy whom everyone snickers about because his contribution to the superhero team seems minimal? All Aquaman does is talk to fish, right? And all Hawkeye does is aim a bow and arrow alongside Iron Man, the Hulk and Thor. Even Sesame Street made fun of him!

Personally, I’m a little bit touchy about this because Hawkeye was my favorite member of the team when I read Avengers comic books as a kid. Why? Because Captain America, Iron Man and Thor got all the glory. They also had their own comic books. Hawkeye’s chance to shine was in the Avengers comics. Plus, I liked him for the reason most seem to make fun of him now: He didn’t have any superhuman or heightened abilities. He was just a really good archer, man!

But while promoting Avengers: Age of Ultron, Jeremy Renner — who plays Hawkeye in the blockbuster movie franchise — addressed his character’s apparent inferiority head-on to the tune of Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud.” Check it out.

Hey, Renner’s not a bad singer! OK, maybe he’s not great, but was he better than you expected? At the very least, he deserves some credit for keeping a straight face through lyrics like “I once got to second base on my Tinder date” and “I once butt-dialed Jean-Claude Van Damme.”

Hopefully, Hawkeye is more than a villain for two-thirds of the movie, only to come back around to fight with the good guys by the end, as he did in the first Avengers movie. He’s better than that. He’s friggin’ Hawkeye!
