‘Rick and Morty’ kill ‘The Simpsons’ in new couch gag

The Simpsons have a recent history of inviting other animated comedies into the show. For example, when they parodied Adventure Time, South Park, Archer and many more in just one scene.

Well, they’ve done it again, only this time with a couch gag. Watch as the titular characters from Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty (Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland) have a mini-episode in a gag that’s set to air during this week’s season finale.

“Do you know how many characters there are on The Simpsons, Morty? There’s like a billion characters. They did an episode where George Bush was their neighbour.”

Now Rick and Morty is an acclaimed show, but it doesn’t have nearly the following of The Simpsons. Who does? So this is a nice little introduction to those who haven’t seen the show.

In the video, the duo crash their spaceship on the Simpsons family and kills them all. It’s pretty graphic — well, as much as Rick and Morty can be on FOX.

While Morty goes into a portal to try to reanimate the Simpsons family, Rick hangs back, drinks Duff beer, steals Marge’s jewelry and freezes Ned Flanders while playing Lisa’s saxophone. There are a lot of Simpsons references.

When Morty comes back from his mission, it turns out Rick used spit to clean out his vials, which morphs the reanimated Simpsons characters into different versions of him. Rick and Morty split, Flanders breaks into a million pieces and Bart Simpson promptly breaks the fourth wall by saying, “No more guest animators.”

It’s a mini-episode of Rick and Morty which perfectly fits into the world of The Simpsons. The duo have the ability to travel to different universes, so it is possible they could show up there. While it’s just a couch gag, and won’t affect the continuity of the two shows, it’s hilarious that the end result is very much what would happen in a Rick and Morty episode. It’s an imaginative show, where literally anything can happen and that’s on full display here.

I can’t say I ever expected to see Rick and Morty chill with the Simpsons family, but boy, I’m glad this was made. It blends what I think is the best animated show currently on TV with what used to be the best.

The second season of Rick and Morty premieres July 26 on Adult Swim.
