Since we haven’t even gotten through the Memorial Day holiday weekend yet, it’s probably too early to declare the breakout star or cultural icon of Summer 2015 yet. But the early front-runner has to be Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa from Mad Max: Fury Road.
The ferocious, avenging war rig driver with a buzz cut, grease paint, mechanical left hand is the signature character of George Miller’s post-apocalyptic revival. And pop culture has responded enthusiastically.
“Females are strong as hell,” as eyewitness Walter Bankston said on Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. That applies to both Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne’s four “mole women” and Immortan Joe’s five wives. So a mash-up of the comedy and Fury Road seems like a natural, though YouTuber Albert Lopez gets the credit for realizing that vision with the following video.
So who’s going to break it to Max Rockatansky that he’s Titus Andromedon in this equation? Although the guitar-rocking Doof Warrior might make a strong argument for that role. (I’m betting Nux is all right with being the Jacqueline Voorhees of this story.)
WIRED‘s Graeme McMillan has also compiled some of the fan art posted online by professional illustrators inspired by Fury Road‘s feminist liberator.
