Did Saturday Night Live really think a sketch featuring Dwayne Johnson dressed up as a giant daisy wasn’t suitable for the live broadcast when The Rock hosted back in March? Apparently so. Or producers thought they’d share some comedy gold with us during the long summer hiatus.
In the latest “Cut For Time” sketch released online, Johnson plays Marty Maynard, the leader of a community theater troupe performing its first annual spring pageant. Men and women dressed as flowers. (And frankly, the costumes are fabulous.) But as you might expect, these adults are somewhat insecure about their performance and we hear their inner monologues as they’re dancing.
Poor Marty. What could be more emasculating than dressing up as a flower and dancing on stage while on a Tinder date? No wonder his penis has gone to hide. (The daisy costume also somehow makes Johnson disappear behind that flower, not an easy task for a hulking presence like The Rock.) Aidy Bryant also stands out in this sketch with her phony smile hiding the personal hell she’s enduring on stage.
The visuals of four adults hiding their shame, yet perhaps secretly loving the fact that their hidden talents for dance have been allowed to bloom, seems like it would have been good enough for SNL‘s live show. But as The AP Party’s Jeremy Klumpp wrote in his recap, the March 30 show hosted by Johnson was one of the best of the season. So maybe there really was no room for this sketch. At least we get to enjoy it now.
