After talking to so many comedians for his book, Sick in the Head, Judd Apatow apparently got the itch to do some stand-up. Of course, he also has a new movie to promote. Apatow is a multimedia machine. His brand is strong.
Critics have been generally favorable toward Trainwreck, which opened last weekend. (In her review for The AP Party, Reva Friedel didn’t much care for it.) But maybe Apatow is at the point where he’d like to spread his stand-up wings and fly, rather than direct another film right away.
At the very least, getting on stage allows him to continue ripping Bill Cosby, as he did Monday night on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. But hey, he waits until halfway through his set to get to Cosby. So Apatow has some material on being the only man in his house and dealing with his daughter’s dates to enjoy first.
Maybe Apatow has a future as a Cosby impersonator, if directing and producing movies ever dries up. All he needs is one of those multi-colored sweaters. Kudos to Apatow for clamping his teeth down and not letting go on this, making sure what Cosby did doesn’t get overlooked or ignored. Remember, it was Hannibal Buress calling Cosby a rapist during a stand-up set that brought these allegations to the attention of many people.
