Just as the Vacation reboot (sequel?) is set to hit theaters July 29, the duo behind this new version has its next gig lined up.
Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. reports that John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein have been hired to write the new Spider-Man film for Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios. The two wrote and directed the new Vacation movie and were under consideration to direct the Spider-Man reboot before the job was given to Jon Watts (Cop Car). Obviously, Sony and Marvel liked their take on the character and material.
Here is the new red-band trailer (and thus probably not safe for work) for Vacation:
Prior to Vacation, Daley and Goldstein teamed up to write the two Horrible Bosses movies, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. (Of course, you might know Daley from his acting roles on Freaks and Geeks and Bones.) The two had been rumored as possible screenwriters for the new Spider-Man film, but Daley confirmed the hiring in an interview with NPR.
Daley: We can finally acknowledge that.
Goldstein: We’ve been saying no comment for the last week.
Daley: This is the first time that we can say that we are writing it.
Goldstein: We’re thrilled.
Daley: … He’s a sharp kid and witty and kind of deals with the fact that he’s an outcast and a geek through humor. It is sort of the safety net for geeks like us, so I think we can totally relate to where he’s coming from. As well as the superpowers, which we also have.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has made it clear that he wants a comedic, John Hughes-like tone for the Spider-Man reboot. The question is how the duo will handle the action beats of the story, but Marvel will surely play a role with that. As Ant-Man most recently demonstrated, the studio’s preference is for directors who can handle character and humor well, while producers deal with the effects and superhero stuff.
The as-yet-untitled Spider-Man film, starring Tom Holland in the title role, is scheduled for a July 28, 2017 release.
