Michael Fassbender really is doing that ‘Assassin’s Creed’ movie

Movie adaptations of video games haven’t really been successful. (Maybe the Resident Evil series would disagree with that.) Yet Hollywood is still trying. And one of the industry’s rising actors has curiously attached himself to such a project that looks to finally be rolling.

Michael Fassbender, likely best known — at least among a certain segment of the moviegoing audience — for playing Magneto in the rebooted X-Men films has been helping to develop a film based on the Assassin’s Creed series of games for the past 18 months or so. It seems like a smart move for the actor, giving himself a franchise he could presumably star in for two or three films. But again, is a video game adaptation really the way to go?

Just in case you doubted whether or not this movie would really happen, an image of Fassbender in full Assassin’s Creed gear was released to Yahoo! Movies on Thursday. Check it out:

Well, no one can argue that Fassbender doesn’t look the part. It’s not like he posed for a photo dressed as Kermit the Frog. Yahoo’s Meriah Doty also reported that Fassbender will be playing an original character created for the movie, and not one from any of the games, as was the natural speculation.

Assassin’s Creed begins filming on Aug. 31, with locations in Malta, London and Spain, working toward a Dec. 21, 2016 release. Justin Kurzel, who worked with Fassbender (and co-star Marion Cotillard) on a 2015 version of Macbeth, will direct the film.
