Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have done a fine job hosting the Golden Globe Awards for each of the past three years. But as hilarious and biting as those two can be, there was never quite the fear of the show going off the rails or something completely uncomfortable happening. Not like when Ricky Gervais hosted the Globes during the previous three years.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association apparently agreed. Either that, or the organization couldn’t find anyone else to host the show. Whatever the reason, Gervais is back. And next year’s Golden Globe Awards telecast has a reason to watch.

Gervais hosted the Globes from 2010 to 2012, and always managed to make the room squirm. One of my personal favorite jokes was from 2010 when he said, “I like a drink as much as the next man. Unless the next man is Mel Gibson.” Calling Bruce Willis “Ashton Kutcher’s dad” the following year was another highlight.
Between Gervais’ return and Chris Rock coming back to host the Academy Awards again, the two big Hollywood awards shows could be must-see television for what the hosts might say, who they might offend.
As the tweet above says, the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards will be held Jan. 10 at 8 p.m. ET and broadcast on NBC. Nominations for the awards will be announced a month earlier.
