Watch: AMC releases first trailer for ‘Preacher’ series

Sunday night during The Walking Dead, AMC premiered the trailer for its upcoming show Preacher, based on the DC Comics/Vertigo series. Fans of the comic book and those who enjoy the sort of television AMC has been creating in recent years are surely anticipating the new series, produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

Dominic Cooper (Agent Carter) plays Jesse Custer, a Texas minister undergoing a crisis of faith who suddenly finds himself merged with something called “Genesis,” the unholy spawn of an angel and demon. This gives him the power of “The Word,” which Custer can use to make anyone do exactly what he says. The driving narrative of the series is Custer deciding to use his power to confront God.

As you can see, the trailer doesn’t quite pass along that supernatural vibe, but this seems to be more of a teaser meant to intrigue potential viewers.

You can also see Ruth Negga (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as Tulip, Custer’s girlfriend, and Joseph Gilgun (Lockout) as Cassidy, an Irish scoundrel who turns out to be a vampire.

If you haven’t read the comics, here’s a primer on the series that we wrote up back in September. While Cooper might not look exactly like Custer does on the illustrated page, this TV adaptation certainly seems like it intends to depict the same level of violence, depravity and dark humor that made the comics so popular.

The first season of Preacher is set for 10 episodes and expected to premiere on AMC in May 2016.
