‘Batman v Superman’ trailer breakdown: The gruesome aftermath of ‘Man of Steel’

Zack Snyder has released another epic trailer. Here’s the first big look at the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), which premiered at Comic-Con and was immediately released online.

Holy shit.

Where we pick up is the aftermath of Superman and General Zod’s fight in Man of Steel, which left Metropolis in peril. We get a look at Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) being in the midst of the civilians on the ground, running towards destruction. The scale seems enormous. It’s clear the battle affected him and was a catalyst in his crusade against Superman.

Superman’s treatment on Earth is mixed — some see him as an enemy to the planet, while others (cult members included) see him as a hero. For those who are unsure why the movie was titled as a battle between two heroes, it’s pretty clear they’re ready to spar because Batman believes Superman can wipe out the human race and needs to be stopped. Plus, (possible) revenge doesn’t hurt.

Throughout the trailer, we’re given nods to Batman’s past. We see a brief flash of the iconic moment where his parents were gunned down in a alley. We see him looking at the suit of Robin, presumably tagged by The Joker. It’s widely rumored that this movie will have Wayne dealing with the loss of his former partner, and this may be a nice little tease to that event.

“Twenty years in Gotham, how many good guys are left?”

This older version of Batman is presumably out of the game, and it seems it’s time to make a comeback.

Ben Affleck perfectly embodies Wayne. My God, does he ever look like he could be Batman. He’s slick, handsome and battle-worn. I’m not trying to count my chickens before they hatch, but I would be shocked if his version of Batman isn’t amazing. He’s signed on to direct and co-write a standalone flick, which is great news.

The trailer also gives us our first serious look at numerous characters including Alfred Pennyworth (Jeremy Irons), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg).

Wonder Woman is shown both in and out of costume, and both look great. Gal Gadot certainly looks the part, and the small action sequences which are shown take away any doubts about the character translating poorly to the big screen. Wonder Woman (2017) is still very far away from being released, but I can’t wait to see Gadot in action.

Look closely and you can see the Invisible Plane.

The consensus online about Jesse Eisenberg being cast as Lex Luthor was generally negative. I wasn’t one of those people, as Eisenberg — an Oscar-nominated actor — is great at playing an evil prick. In this trailer, though, it sure seems like he’s going to nail the iconic baddie. The way he says “the red capes are coming” is perfectly villainous. Also watch out, Superman — it seems Lex has got some Kryptonite.

The final scene shows our two beloved heroes facing off. Superman (who’s quite strong) rips two doors off the Batmobile, which causes the Caped Crusader to stand up against his adversary in a showdown which is going to be legendary.

I’ll talk about it later next week, but maybe DC isn’t in as bad shape as initially thought. I know it’s just a trailer, but if you want your doubts to subside, just click play. March 25, 2016 can’t come soon enough.
