Zendaya cast in key role in Spider-Man reboot

The new Spider-Man reboot in partnership with Sony and Marvel Studios has added Zendaya to its cast.

According to Deadline, actress-singer Zendaya has landed the role of Michelle in the new adaptation of the web-slinger. There are no details what her role entails – whether she’s playing a romantic lead, a villain or someone else altogether – but it is reported to be a key role.

While Zendaya may not be familiar to some, the 19-year-old has already had quite an impressive career. She starred in the Disney show Shake it Up from 2010 to 2013, released an album which charted on the Billboard 100, and has over six million followers on Twitter. She currently stars in the sitcom K.C. Undercover, which airs on the Disney Channel.

Now, I’d bet the character Michelle is just a front for another character. However, a character with the same name, Michelle Gonzalez, is an established character in the Spider-Man universe who hasn’t yet appeared in any of the films. In the comics, she’s a criminal defense lawyer and Peter Parker’s roommate who just so happened to be skilled in martial arts. But who knows, she could be playing Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane Watson, or another famous Spider-Man character, although it would be refreshing to seem them take things in an entirely different direction.

It’s exciting to see this movie come to fruition, even if we’ve had our fair share of Spider-Man over the years. Spider-Man is set for release June 7, 2017, and is set to star Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Marisa Tomei, and will be directed by Jon Watts.
