AMC’s ‘Walking Dead’ spinoff casts its first two actors

With the raging success of The Walking Dead, AMC understandably wants to keep that business going for as long as possible. In September, the network ordered a pilot for a spinoff show, written by the source graphic novel’s creator Robert Kirkman and Dave Erickson (Sons of Anarchy), focusing on survivors of the zombie apocalypse in a different location (possibly the UK) from TWD‘s regular cast of characters.

The spinoff show does not yet have an official title, though the working title appears to be Cobalt (for reasons that seem to be unknown or obscure). With filming expected to begin in December, the cast now has its first two actors. According to Deadline, Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) and Alycia Debnam Carey (Into the Storm) have been officially added to the show.

A male divorced teacher named Sean Cabrera and female guidance counselor, Nancy Tompkins, will reportedly be the two central characters of this spinoff. Dillane and Carey will play the son and daughter of Tompkins. It’s believed Dillane’s character will have a drug problem. Neither of the older roles have yet been cast.

Those character descriptions don’t sound terribly exciting, but that’s probably unfair to say since so little else is known about the show at this point. Some fans thought the Walking Dead spinoff might focus on scientists working to end the outbreak that caused the zombie apocalypse. That would have been an interesting change of pace. The story may also take place in the earlier days of the epidemic, before the world became what we see on The Walking Dead.
