‘Arrow’ reveals Diggle’s new look, and it’s a bit goofy

During Comic-Con in July, producers for Arrow revealed some of the changes that the show would undergo in season four. Oliver Queen was getting a new costume, and an official image was released at the time.

Someone else sporting a new look will be Diggle, Oliver’s sidekick, former bodyguard and soldier who’s been a key part of Team Arrow, especially in the field. But in season three, Diggle realized he would need to conceal his identity to protect his wife and new child. He was getting a costume!

A low-res image of concept art was shown at Comic-Con, but an official image of Diggle superhero-type uniform has finally been released.

That… looks a little goofy, doesn’t it? Maybe it’s because we’re accustomed to Diggle (played by David Ramsey) in a more conventional, civilian ensemble of black leather jacket and jeans. This doesn’t vary too much from that, but he obviously now has a helmet that covers up his face and protects his head.

Maybe it’s because Diggle kind of looks like Magneto with that thing on. Maybe it’s because the helmet doesn’t cover up his face like a superhero mask. (Many fans speculated that Diggle would adopt the Guardian identity from DC Comics, who wore a helmet that covered the upper half of his face, like Batman’s mask does.)

Diggle’s costume will probably look fine in action, better than it does in a touched-up Photoshopped still image. When he’s running around and fighting bad guys, we might not get a chance to focus on how goofy that helmet looks. (Laurel’s blond Black Canary wig isn’t a great look, but it’s accepted now.) Or maybe the show will own it, giving Felicity and the gang lines that make fun of Diggle.

We’ll find out when Arrow premieres on Oct. 7.
