Christmas specials are always kind of lame, right? There’s maybe a little bit of “so bad that it’s good to them,” with the gaudy sweaters, snowy cabin settings, mistletoe hanging, fireplace crackling, egg nog and brandy in hand, and of course, singing. Oh, the singing of those classic Christmas carols.
Apparently, Bill Murray has an affection for those televised Christmas specials too, because he’s going to do one with his Lost in Translation director, Sofia Coppola. Murray will be singing Christmas carols, hopefully as well as he once sang the Star Wars theme on Saturday Night Live. (No video of the original SNL sketch is available for embedding. How is that possible?)

“It’s not going to be live,” Murray told Variety. “We’re going to do it like a little movie. It won’t have a format, but it’s going to have music. It will have texture. It will have threads through it that are writing. There will be prose.”
Finally, a Christmas special that the entire family might really enjoy! Hopefully, this turns out to be a classic that can be shown for years to come.
There are still plenty of details to be worked out. For one thing, we don’t know what network will be showing Murray’s Christmas special. Will it be on NBC with any sort of loose tie to SNL? Comedy Central? Something a bit further down the cable listings like IFC? Stay tuned. We’ll certainly keep a watch out for any further announcements.
