‘Furious 7’ director James Wan signs on to helm ‘Aquaman’

With the huge success of Furious 7, James Wan showed he could successfully direct a blockbuster franchise movie. Prior to that, the filmmaker was primarily known for horror fare such as Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring. But he has now obviously moved up the studio totem pole after making a film that’s drawn $1.4 billion in global box office.

According to The Hollywood Reporter‘s Borys Kit, Wan has signed on to direct Warner Brothers’ Aquaman film, scheduled for a 2018 release. Kurt Johnstad (300, Act of Valor) will write the movie’s screenplay. Jason Momoa is attached to star as the deep sea hero, first appearing as the character in next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and then in 2017’s Justice League.

Can it possibly be a coincidence that this news was announced a day after cinema’s first Aquaman, Vincent Chase, made his debut in theaters with the Entourage movie?

Top that, James Wan! Of course, not too many directors can match “James Cameron” when it comes to creating epic blockbuster moments on screen.

Wan is also set to take on another big-budget franchise after Aquaman. In his report, Kit also wrote that Wan has agreed to direct Robotech for Sony, based on the sci-fi anime series that ran for 85 episodes in the 1980s. Hopes are surely high for that movie to spawn a series of sequels like the Transformers films. Up first for Wan, however, is The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist, scheduled for a June 2016 release.
