Joel McHale says it’s official: ‘Community’ is done after six seasons

We got our six seasons. So will we ever get that movie?

After being canceled by NBC, Community had a sixth season on Yahoo! Screen. But the show’s run is over, according to star Joel McHale, who dropped the bad news in an interview with Washington, D.C.’s Metro Weekly.

Is it getting another season on Yahoo?

No. They wanted to. But all of our contracts were up after six years. All the actors on the show, almost without exception — their stock has risen significantly and it’s out of the pay rate that is affordable to make the show. So you’re not going to be able to get Alison Brie or Gillian Jacobs at a normal television salary anymore. There is just not enough money to be able to pay for the show.

McHale didn’t just randomly mention Brie and Jacobs because they’re his longtime co-stars on Community. Brie is starring in September’s Sleeping With Other People, while Jacobs is one of the featured actors on Netflix’s Love, which is set to debut next year and has already been picked up for a two-season run.

But is there still hope for a Community movie? McHale told Esquire it’s up to creator Dan Harmon. If he writes a script and, of course, a studio is willing to finance the movie the cast is all in. But Harmon has admitted that maybe he needs a little time away from those characters before he can really get cracking on the project.
