Among the many revelations from last year’s Sony hack was that the studio had no idea what to do with the Spider-Man franchise after the perceived failure of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. But one of the ideas proposed is going to become a reality, involving two of Hollywood’s currently hottest filmmakers.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street) are attached to produce an animated Spider-Man projects for Sony, which is targeting a July 20, 2018 release date. The film will be independent from the live-action Spider-Man movies, which are now linked with the Marvel cinematic franchise in a partnership between the two studios. Does this mean that someone besides Peter Parker could possibly be behind Spidey’s mask? (Probably not.)

As reported by The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider, Lord and Miller will write the treatment for the Spider-Man animated movie and are attached as producers. Whether or not they will direct the film is still yet to be determined. The duo is also developing The Flash for Warner Brothers, though do not have a producing role, nor are they currently signed on as directors. Both movies are scheduled for a 2018 release, with The Flash (starring Ezra Miller) set to hit theaters in March of that year.
While it may not be an either-or situation between Spider-Man and the Flash, Sony wants Lord and Miller to direct their project, according to Sneider’s report. Given their success with The LEGO Movie and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, locking the team down as directors would seem particularly important. That might be the deciding factor, though no deal is yet in place.
