Report: CW developing spinoff superhero team-up series

We’re probably guilty of getting too geeky here at The AP Party. But movie studios continue to churn out superhero blockbusters and the trend has flowed over to TV as well. Arrow and The Flash have been huge successes for the CW, and while they don’t feature superheroes, per se, Fox’s Gotham and ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter take place in worlds where superheroes do or will exist.

So it probably shouldn’t be a surprise that CW wants to make a push for more superhero dramas on its schedule with what might be the most ambitious small-screen venture yet. According to Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva, the producers of Arrow and The Flash are developing a show teaming up several characters spun off from those shows.

The featured players would be Ray Palmer/Atom (played by Brandon Routh), Martin Stein/Firestorm (Victor Garber) and bad guy Leonard Snart/Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller). Also listed in the cast is Caity Lotz, who played Sara Lance/Canary — but if you watch Arrow, you know that it would be difficult for that character to be on another show — so it’s unclear as to whether or not she would be playing the same role.

Andreeva also reports that plans are to include three more DC Comics characters that have not appeared on TV series, in addition to others from Arrow and The Flash that might make occasional — or regular — guest spots.

At first glance, this concept seems to be kind of a mishmash. Obviously, these characters are each costumed superheroes or villains with exceptional talents, but they haven’t really been linked, story-wise. Yet it’s also apparent that Atom and Firestorm were being developed for potential spinoff series. That has led some to speculate that the show could be sort of a team-up anthology, like DC Comics’ The Brave and the Bold.
