‘The Flash’ previews original Flash Jay Garrick with comic book tribute

The CW gets it when it comes to staying true to DC Comics’ original roots. More specifically, the network allows producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg to be unapologetically geeky in its faithfulness to the four-color source material that spawned The Flash, his rogues gallery and supporting cast.

An important character in the character’s mythology is the Golden Age Flash, Jay Garrick, whose existence was teased in The Flash‘s season one finale with the appearance of Garrick’s Mercury-like winged helmet. The CW announced at Comic-Con that the original Flash will be played by Teddy Sears, and we got our first look at him during the Television Critics Association press tour in Los Angeles.

Longtime comic book fans will love this.

Our modern riff on this classic cover. Man this is exciting.

As you can see on the left side of the image, issue No. 123 of The Flash (published in Sept. 1961) featured the first appearance of the Barry Allen version of the character in a story titled “Flash of Two Worlds.” The comic book also introduced the concept of multiple universes, with Allen and Garrick existing on parallel Earths. That will surely come into play with Garrick’s introduction on the CW show, and should open up a whole bunch of new story possibilities.

No, the image doesn’t provide the best look of Sears as Garrick, but certainly makes it clear with his costume — and this promotional material — that producers intend to be faithful to the tone and character of those original Flash tales.

Season two of The Flash premieres on Oct. 6 at 8 p.m. ET.
