Video: ‘Crimson Peak’ trailer promises horror and romance

A haunted house horror film directed by Guillermo del Toro? Sign us up! When can we see this?

Referring to del Toro’s new film, Crimson Peak, as a haunted house movie may be reductive, as the story appears to be richer than simply a tale of a house inhabited by ghosts and scarred by terrible crimes. But as you can see from the official teaser trailer, that gothic mansion is most certainly a prominent character in this film.

Don’t use the bathtub if you’re afraid the house is haunted, folks. Bathtubs are trouble.

Crimson Peak also appears to be a doomed Gothic romance between Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers) and Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland), with Jessica Chastain (A Most Violent Year) lurking ominously in the background as ghost and demons soon make their presences felt. Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) also stars in the film. Such an impressive cast gives del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) quite a foundation to build his movie upon.

What also makes this film notable is that it’s the first horror film del Toro has made for American audiences. In this country, he may be better known for blockbuster fare like the Hellboy films and 2013’s Pacific Rim, but he made his name with foreign horror films such as Cronos and The Devil’s Backbone. It’s exciting to see him get back to those roots for a larger worldwide audience. Also encouraging is that this is a R-rated film, which hopefully makes the horror and potential gore more intense.

Crimson Peak is scheduled for an Oct. 16 release to get us ready for Halloween.
