With so many sites devoting coverage to culture and film these days, it’s difficult to be taken by surprise. But I’d never heard of Gods of Egypt, an upcoming movie starring Gerard Butler (300) and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones), and directed by Alex Proyas.
In the mid-to-late-90s, based on The Crow and Dark City, Proyas was a filmmaker whose work was always worth watching. However, he hasn’t made anything very good during the past 15 years, depending on what you think of I, Robot. Now he’s directed a movie that looks as if it could go straight-to-video, if not for the massive amount of CGI effects used.
Those effects certainly appear interesting, though their quality is questionable. That probably applies to Gods of Egypt overall too. Check out the trailer.

So we have Egyptian gods battling each other in suits of armor that sort of take the form of animals. Horus (Coster-Waldau) was an Egyptian god often depicted with the head of a falcon, for instance. The animal incarnation of Set (Butler) was less unclear, perhaps a jackal. But who cares about all that when they’re flying at each other and fighting in armor?
While Gods of Egypt is apparently going to be shown in theaters, its Feb. 26, 2016 release date indicates that Summit Entertainment isn’t expecting it to be a hit. But maybe it could be a cult hit. Based on the trailer, this looks like a movie that could either be a pleasant surprise or a hilariously bad effort filled with terrible acting and overblown special effects. Either way, it could be worth seeing. I mean, did you see those giant sand snakes at the end of the trailer?
