Video: Hugh Jackman uglies himself up in ‘Pan’ trailer

Apparently, we can’t get enough of Peter Pan.

Next week (Thursday, Dec. 4), NBC will broadcast its musical, Peter Pan Live!, starring Allison Williams in the title role and Christopher Walken as Captain Hook. (You can view a trailer here.)

However, the boy who wouldn’t grow up gets the big-screen treatment next summer in Pan, directed by Joe Wright (Pride and Prejudice, Atonement). Basically, it’s “Peter Pan Begins,” the origin story of the character (a reimagining!) and the fairy tale so many of us are familiar with (which was made into a movie as recently as 2003).

Here’s the first trailer for the film, featuring a largely unrecognizable Hugh Jackman as the pirate Blackbeard.

What’s interesting here is that Pan and Hook (not yet a captain) appear to be allies early in their story. But as we know, that will change. Will we eventually see them become enemies in a sequel?

Casting Levi Miller as Peter seems to be setting him to grow — at least a little bit — into the role. Will Garrett Hedlund remain so handsome as the eventual Captain Hook? Tiger Lily has typically been played by a Native American, but Rooney Mara is likely to stay rather white in that role.

Pan is scheduled for a July 17, 2015 release.
