It’s about time for the Michael Keaton comeback, isn’t it? Or maybe we’re already in the midst of his revival with his role in Robocop and playing the lead in the upcoming Birdman.
This seems to be a real meta turn for Keaton as Riggan Thomson, most famous for playing the superhero Birdman on screen, but whose career has clearly fallen on hard times. (It might be harsh to say Keaton, 62, has taken that hard a fall since playing Batman, though.) To reinvent himself, Thomson writes, directs and stars in a Broadway play. But everyone in his life seems to think this venture won’t end well.
Here’s the trailer for the film, set for an Oct. 17 release. (One NSFW warning: The swear words fly in this trailer, so maybe you want the headphones in.) Edward Norton, Zach Galifianakis and Emma Stone co-star.
Birdman is also intriguing because it’s directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, known for deeply dark, serious films like 21 Grams, Babel and Biutiful. A surreal, absurdist comedy is something you would not expect from him, though this does look like it could end up rather dark.
