To get away from romantic comedies, Reese Witherspoon apparently has to create those kinds of roles for herself.
Thus, the actress is a producer on Wild, an adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s memoir, which depicts the author’s hiking 1,100 miles along the Pacific Crest Trail to clear her mind after her mother’s death, failing marriage and heroin addiction. Here’s the first trailer for the film.

Wild is directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, his first film since Dallas Buyers Club. Strayed’s book was adapted into a screenplay by Nick Hornby, author of High Fidelity and About a Boy, among several other novels. (Personally, that has my curiosity piqued.) The movie is set for a limited release on Dec. 5.
