Video: Ryan Reynolds shows an R-rating matters for ‘Deadpool’

Deadpool is one of those comic book properties that diehard Marvel Comics and X-Men fans are likely familiar with, but the character isn’t that well known among the general public.

Yet Ryan Reynolds has been pushing hard to play “The Merc With a Mouth” for years, especially a version faithful to the ruthless, wise-cracking assassin created by artist Rob Liefeld and defined as a character by writer Joe Kelly. (Reynolds actually played a version of Deadpool, or his alter-ego, Wade Wilson, in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but everyone would like to forget that movie ever happened.) And now, it’s really happening, thanks to the surge in popularity of superhero comic book movies.

The question is whether or not 20th Century Fox would allow a Deadpool movie to have the R-rating that would be true to the extreme violence and potty mouth fans associate with the character. Reynolds initially dashed those hopes.

But that turns out to have been an April Fool’s Joke, setting up the release of the following video, which may be the first ever devoted to announcing a film’s rating. If it’s not the first, it certainly has to be the most entertaining.

C’mon — who doesn’t love seeing Mario Lopez get laid out by a camera or whatever piece of equipment that was? Even if playing along with a gag like that deletes what thread of journalistic credibility Lopez and Extra had (stop laughing), being a good sport and showing a willingness to be the butt of a joke is worth some respect.

So are you interested in Deadpool now?

By the way, if you haven’t seen it, this is the test footage that reportedly got the movie green-lighted at Fox. And yes, that’s Ryan Reynolds’ voice behind the mask.
