Everyone watched the new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens released on Thursday. Even Matthew McConaughey in space. And he reacted the way many of us did, especially after seeing Han Solo and Chewbacca again: He was reduced to tears.
Wait, was that McConaughey or his character Cooper in a scene from Interstellar? Hey, it’s all in what you choose to believe. Interstellar was all about the belief that love was the dominant force in the universe, and it’s clear that Cooper loves this new Star Wars trailer. See for yourself.
What a brilliant mash-up by @oskararnarson on YouTube, salvaging maybe the best scene from Interstellar and creating something that is unfortunately better — or at least more entertaining — than Christopher Nolan’s film.
(Is that being too harsh on Interstellar? In my review, I admired its ambition, but thought the movie fell short of greatness. The further we get from that film, the less I remember of it, which seems like an indictment on some level.)
After watching those shots of the downed Star Destroyer and Chrome Stormtrooper, McConaughey (or Cooper) probably had to go out for a drive in his Lincoln and muse philosophically about what he’d just seen. Or we’ll see him just before The Force Awakens‘ Dec. 18 release, and he’ll have made a brigade of beer can Stormtroopers.
This probably won’t be the last such mash-up involving the Star Wars trailer we’ll see. We’ve got ourselves a meme! But let’s give due credit to where it all began.
