Video: The Rock vs. earthquake in ‘San Andreas’ trailer

If an earthquake struck Los Angeles — a massive earthquake that laid waste to the city — wouldn’t you want The Rock to be the one to save you?

That appears to be the premise of San Andreas, in which Dwayne Johnson stars as a search-and-rescue helicopter pilot trying to find and save his daughter after a magnitude 9 earthquake hits California. Carla Gugino plays Johnson’s wife, who accompanies him on the search for their child (Alexandra Daddario). Here is the teaser trailer for the film.

Recent blockbusters have taken some flack for depicting widespread disaster without really addressing the consequences that come with the event. But I think that’s directed more toward superhero movies that portray titanic slugfests that pull buildings and human lives into their conflict with no regard for safety or casualty. (Think Man of Steel.)

This probably doesn’t apply to San Andreas, since the movie is about the disaster itself, along with the efforts to save people and evacuate cities. Although this does look to have a healthy amount of CGI destruction on an awe-inspiring scale. I know I’ll be disappointed if the movie doesn’t end with The Rock pulling the San Andreas fault back together with his bare hands. I might have to adjust those expectations a bit.

Directed by Brad Peyton (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island), San Andreas opens in theaters May 25, 2015.
