Finally. After all the speculation, all the rumors, all the memes about who would star in season two of HBO’s True Detective, we have a teaser trailer to confirm the reported casting and the return of one of 2014’s best TV shows.
There’s Rachel McAdams as one of the detectives in the storyline. Series creator Nic Pizzolatto said we’d get a female lead, and we see her right away. Colin Farrell with a bolo tie and mustache are soon to follow. Vince Vaughn looks fearsome (and maybe a bit insecure) as the villain of the piece, with Kelly Reilly as his admiring wife. And Taylor Kitsch completes the trio on the law enforcement side.
Besides the casting and possible storylines, this teaser trailer also establishes that the setting for this season of True Detective will be quite different from what we saw in season one. These aren’t the backwoods and swampland of rural Louisiana. We’re in the city. The first thing we’re shown are freeways. There are slums. Factories. Sleek corporate boardrooms. Industry, ambition.
We don’t know if season two and its eight episodes will include any of the existential, philosophical musings made famous by Matthew McConaughey’s Rust Cohle, but Farrell’s character, Ray Velcoro, looks like he could venture into that territory over a cigarette. (Let’s hope not, so the show avoids becoming a caricature of itself.)
True Detective premieres on HBO Sunday, June 21.
